This book is centered around the struggles of Rupi Kaur’s life: whether it’s anxiety, depression, or sexual assault, this book puts into words how these things have affected people. The book was sectioned into 4 parts: mind, heart, rest, and awake.
Rating: 4.5/5 stars ⭐️
Mind:
The beginning part of the novel describes Kaur’s personal experiences from her perspective, ending with changing her negative mindset to a more optimistic one.
Personally, I enjoyed the idea of her defining and normalizing many “taboo” ideas. It was enlightening to be able to connect with this part of the book.
One line that stood out to me was,“... i am not a lesser version of myself because of the anxiety…”
Heart:
This part of the book shows how love plays an important part in her life. I appreciated how Kaur has emphasized how her friends mean the world to her.
Towards the end of this section, she’s able to find herself and love again, which made me feel empathy.
“...who gives me butterflies when i could look in the mirror and take my own breath away…”
Rest:
‘Rest’ first starts talking about Kaur’s family and her life of being an immigrant. I was personally able to deeply connect with this section the most, because she talked about anxiety and the pressure that was put upon her because of her family situation. This I feel as well can be connected with millions of people, which is why Kaur’s poetry is so important.
“...i measure my self-worth by how productive i’ve been but no matter how hard i work i still feel inadequate…”
Awake
Whether it’s her childhood trauma, her home country’s history, or her own relationship with herself, Kaur was able to forgive herself and grow from her past.
I enjoyed this section because it talked about real societal issues and being able to empower people through her writing.
“... what a relief to discover that the aches i thought were mine alone are also felt by so many others…”
